In its 18th year, fueled by dialogue resulting from the film, For Colored Girls, and the original 1970s choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, African American artists presented work eploring the complexities of various relationships. Annelies Dykgraaf is an artist who continues to inspire me because she produces work that reflects a vision that I believe in and because she lives a life that makes a difference in our community. She is truly an artist that does not see color; at least not in the way that most of us do. She was born in the Nigerian revolution to American missionary parents, her mother worked throughout her career in a particular language within a specific tribal group. Her father worked as together they gave their lives to a people making a difference in a community different from the one that they grew up in.

Annelies is one of the founders of the Art Center Cooperative here in Jacksonville; I remember an early organizational meeting in a home in Arlington where ideas were shared from different generations and different races for getting started on building something new that would be a cooperative effort where artists could gather and express new ideas. Annelies is this month's featured artist at one of the two galleries the Art Center currently runs. The exhibition is called "Touch;" the focus is on the importance of touch across the racial divide that in itself will produce a community cohesion that brings new and exciting opportunities for all those who share the space.

Day one, drawing the mural sketch. Yes it was frigid cold in Florida on Jan. 23. The Art Center teamed up with HandsOn Jax and volunteers to work on a mural covering the entire module in the center of a low income housing area off Golfair on the northside of Jacksonville. TAC artists have been giving their Saturdays up to accomplish this mural and work in the community. Stay tuned for updates and the final mural revealed.

Artist Marsha Hatcher and myself did similar images of Cayenne Pepper Pickers from our trip to Nigeria.

Marsha's image is in acrylic painting with white paint only. Mine is a linoleum print.

My mentor was artist Cookie Davis. I put my "Uwacu" print into 3-D in clay putting the patterns of the skirt "carved" in the clay.

Cookie's sculpture is on the left and mine is on the right. This show is at the Ritz Theatre and LaVilla Museum. It opened Nov. 19, 2009 and goes to July 30, 2010.

I did four images of women titled Joseph's Tunic I, II, III and IV, getting inspiration from the "coat of many colors", but implementing multiple designs found on fabric. For this show all the images were framed together, but they can stand alone. I plan to carry these images further and print them on colorful backgrounds incorporating the "many colors". This show was at the Karpeles Manuscript Library and Museum sponsored by JCAAA (Jacksonville Consortium of African American Artists) for the month of April.

Community Foundation awards grant to Annelies

On June 5, 2008, I received a letter from the Community Foundation in Jacksonville informing me that at its May 9, 2008 artist review panel, I was recommended to receive a $3,500 grant for materials to create new patterns in woodblock printing in order to produce a series reflective of Africa. The Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation approved the recommendation at its meeting on May 27, 2008. The grant is made from funds provided by the J. Shepherd Jr. and Mary Ann Bryan Arts Endowment.
This is my first grant and I am greatly honored to be chosen as a recipient.

This is titled "Holding on to Heritage" and will be part of the JCAAA show at FCCJ North Campus in the new year 2008 with works inspired from the Harlem Renaissance period and its artists.

This is a woodblock that was both burned and cut into. The main central figure is holding onto two masks in her hands, holding her heritage which also surrounds her. The women in the background are sowing and planting and the woman in the foreground is making a pot with a baby on her back.

Malnutrition Kills

Serious title for a serious problem. Tens of thousands of children die each year in Africa and India due to lack of food and lack of proper nutrients. In Nigeria rural women will have several children, not knowing if even one will survive (they often wait to even name a child after a certain period to see if the child will survive); while in the States we choose to have abortions or now have the continuing rise of the problem of obese children, a stark contrast. Just being aware and knowledgable of situations around the world is a good start and being conscious of the food we waste. Feel free to visit Unicef.org to learn more.

"Shattered Image" is acrylic with blue glass and is one of the images done for "What's Goin' On".

This image relates to all that bombards us to change our image from the littlest thing in wrinkle creams, to botox, to lipo suction, to acutal cosmetic alterings of our image. So, just to be your natural self as you were created in the Image of God is challenged by all these "enhancements to beautify".

Where my parents live in Niger State, Nigeria (about an hour out of the town of Kontagora), you have to cross a river in order to get to their house among the Avadi people. In the rainy season you have to take a canoe across, because the water depth can fluctuate between 5ft and 20ft depending on the rains. Makes life interesting!
